Captive Prince by Emily-Fay Captive Prince by Emily-Fay
I finally finished that Captive Prince WIP I’ve had knocking around for ages. The wait for the third book is killing me! I guess this is technically my first picture of 2016, although I spent the majority of yesterday working on it. Painting like this takes an absolute age, but I’m glad I persevered. There are bits I’m really pleased with and other bits I could have probably done better, but if I fiddle with it any more I’ll go mad.

This is an older piece, but it's still breath taking. I love the Captive prince books...would you be up for drawing Nicaise in the future? After seeing this piece, I can't help but be curious to see your interpretation of him. Great work!

Thank you very much! I hope you enjoy it! Book one can be a bit tricky as it deals with some difficult topics (like slavery, consent etc.), but if you stick it out books two and three are more than worth it. It's one of my favourite series ever!

I tried really hard with the lighting in this picture. As the last picture of 2015 I really wanted to try and push myself with everything I'd experimented with/learned throughout the year, and this was the result! :meow:

I have joined the group that started reading the series because of your amazing artwork here. At first I had thought it was supposed to be Draco and Harry but then I read your comments and decided to seek out this series and see how it was.
I guiltily bought the books right away and finished reading them within days of them arriving in the mail.
I felt that I should come back to see the picture again once I had context for the story and I think you did a very good likeness of the two of them, though I think Damon should be a bit beefier. As another commenter said, their expressions work very well together and you did a very good job of reflecting Laurent's iciness in his stare.
Overall, wonderful colour and beautiful work with the lighting, wish I had talent like yours. :)

Ahh <3 I'm glad my art has encouraged people to pick the series up! I really enjoy it - you can probably see where the Damen/Laurent relationship fits in with my love of Harry/Draco and the enemies-to-lovers trope.

Thank you for coming back to comment! I'm glad I managed to capture something of the two from the books, but I know I didn't quite get Damen's size and power right. Unfortunately the way I've always drawn guys leans more towards the tall and willowy end of the scale, so it's definitely something I need to work on. I really want to do some rough sketches of these two together to see if I can nail Damen's build down!

Haha yeah I can totally see that :D

Yeah that's fair, it's hard to change the way you draw people when you're so used to doing it a certain way, it always seems to look wrong. I know for myself, when I sketch random faces, the features all seem to end up looking the same, just with different hair on them.

Book one can be quite hard-going because of some of the subject matter but book two makes it SO worth the hardship. It's one of my fave series ever!!

Oh, good to know. Thanks!
I read heaps of reviews on Goodreads that pretty much all said the same thing as what you said: nothing happens in the first book but it slowly starts to get better by book two.

Well nothing happens in terms of romance! The fact that book one is set mostly in one place can perhaps make it seem that not a lot is going on, but there is rather a lot of plot development and groundwork that allows for book two to really shine.

That is some intense lighting. The way it reflects off the hair is astonishing, especially on the brown hair, makes it look golden. What's really interesting is the second greyish light source. You used dual light sources, something normally terrifying, dauntlessly and created form brilliantly! The tensions points in the lower figure's, the darker skinned one's, clothes is remarkable. You convey weight and gravity very well through it. Those expressions are fierce. The upper figure has a look of cold apathy, but a foreboding aura that permeates the duo. The lower figure has the eye of the tiger with how deadly he looks at the viewer. His expression enhances the upper figures and vice versa. Combined the two create an interesting atmosphere that's candid, but at the same time fiery. Spectacular piece. Thank you for making it!

Oh my gosh, thank you for such a wonderful comment! You've really made my day <3 This is only the fifth "lineless" drawing I've ever done and the first in full colour rather than black & white, so the technique is still very new to me, but I always try and finish the year or start the next with something that really pushes my boundaries. The way you describe their attitudes and interaction is actually pretty accurate to how they are in the book, so I'm really pleased I managed to convey that! Hopefully it bodes well for my art this year! <3

Oh, well you see I analyze the artists who are leaps and bounds better than me, people I consider masters of their craft. I do this because I want to know how you're so strong. I don't really expect comments back, especially ones so wonderful and kind. I'm glad I could make happy. :)

Pardon me if I'm wrong, but isn't a lineless drawing just a painting? I thought it was. I made one myself and really enjoyed the product and experience. Piece gave me faith in myself. In any event, your work is astonishing, so I highly doubt you could make something bad no matter how you go at it. Happy new year. :)

I suppose it is just a painting, really. I've always felt more comfortable having a solid lineart and all of the detail planned out before starting with colour, but even with that I do occasionally use a more "painterly" style of colouring. I guess I still feel the urge to make the "lineless" distinction when talking about my recent experiments of building form with the colour and lighting with nothing more than a sketch to work from.

Happy new year to you, too! :meow:

It's a hard thing to do, this I know. Creating a painting from a sketch underneath. I don't think it's how traditional painting actually works too, but I could be wrong. I've only ever worked digitally. Nevertheless, your work with color and form is why I began watching you. I fervently believe you can do great things with painting and through those great things maybe a little will rub off on me, aye? But now I'm stealing your time. My apologies, madam.
